I was recently on a camping trip to South Dakota. It was my first time in the state and I really enjoyed the scenery. It is green, hilly and full of wildlife. Camping in Custer State Park gave me a chance to get to Mount Rushmore. Building that into the side of a mountain was quite the feat! Amazing to think about that. I also enjoyed the little program they showed in the evening to tell you about the accomplishments of each of the 4 men. I do, however, feel a little used when I visit such a major tourist attraction. Something about tons of people cramming into a small space, parking lot, etc. to see one thing. There was a HUGE gift shop and a cafeteria and I felt like people were only there to take a photo with them in it and leave. There was no appreciation for the actual sculpture or energy that went into creating it. But I digress. I would highly suggest visiting Mount Rushmore at night. They light it up after dark and it was pretty spectacular to see that. Something a little different as well. I am including my favorite shot from the trip! It was taken from my camp site at sunset. There was this fog that rolled in just at sunset. Amazing!
